We don't have a substantial amount of blog followers and let's face it, I am not the most avid blogger or even a very skilled one at that. But yesterday made me change my way of thinking when I received an anonymous comment, from a complete stranger, complimenting me on how well written this very blog was. So, in honor of that comment which flattered my ego beyond belief, I will continue our blog but this time, with more affection.

Earlier in the week I had the opportunity to meet some very fabulous people; other local entrepreneurs doing just what it is that I do. The infamous crowd included Shopcrawlr, Blue 7, Shop Good, Heirloom Shoes, Green Bambino, Bella Vita Jewelry, Keep It Local, A date with Iris, Collected Thread, The Plaza District, Native Roots Market, and a lecture by Braid Creative. I am certain many of these names are not new to you, and if they are, I do sincerely hope you check them out.

Braid creative held a very interesting discussion on their business consulting services & informative self-assessment quizzes in which we partook on our own clock. From these small tests came a fleeting of questions in which I hadn't thought of in some time. You see, running a business isn't rocket science, but it does utilize your brain in a far less creative way than I had dreamt of prior to opening a shop. I am often so occupied with calculating numbers, maintaining a budget, and organizing future adventures, that I now lack that initial creative spark that I've always so naturally held onto.

As I am typing away and rereading for grammatical errors, I ask myself, is this content even appropriate for Unlabeled's Blog? And it is, I do feel, related to the shop. I think this because one of the excellent points made by Braid creative was that your customers will shop your store if they like you. How simple of an idea, I thought, to gain customers simply from being personable. The longer I lingered on this concept of attracting customers with the same interests as me, made me realize how true that was. I sincerely enjoy my job, more than any other job I'd ever had before. Is it scary? Yes. Will it make me rich? That isn't likely, though, one can hope, but it will continue to bring me the same nonsecular pleasure despite the aforementioned uncertainties.

So thank you, to all of my customers for making it possible for me to live out a dream and love every second of it. I appreciate your patronage & support so very much. :)

I adore color and this season is filled with vibrant hues like fiery oranges, sapphire blues, and electric yellows. The weather is so graciously turning, flowers are blooming, and the warm sunny days are like nothing else. This time of year influences me to prop open the door and let the fresh air roll in. We want to take advantage of this cheery time here, so we are hosting lots of events in April.

Ah yes, the questions never fail to arise among new shoppers, 'Are you a second hand store? Do your clothes have labels?" And the answer is no, we are not a second hand store and yes our clothes do have labels. The name unlabeled derives from the sense that everyone has their own style; a unique style that cannot be summed up with the simplicity of a title...or label. If you shop at Unlabeled, then most likely you love to find one-of-a-kind treasures that no one else has along with exclusive styles of tees that have been designed & printed locally.

You see, Unlabeled newbies, we are all about keeping the moo-lah here. As a citizen of the USA and a fellow Okie, I (we) feel it is (my)our duty to contribute to society. Whether you realize it or not, small businesses attribute a lot to our local economy. The sales tax that we collect goes to pay teachers, firefighters, policemen and more...but I am getting off track here.

Unlabeled features a lot of local artists, jewelry designers, and crafters plus a few indie brands that you may not otherwise recognize. Fashion is about the look, not the tag! We try to keep our prices reasonable (most everything under $100) and we insist on purchasing limited quantities of styles so that not everyone is marching around town in the same digs.

Does the name make sense now? :)unlabeled apparelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01097978102711656249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-664684162579398701.post-35740991444602948042011-12-27T14:25:00.000-08:002011-12-27T14:25:38.061-08:00TransitionFashion moves at a rate much different than that of the weather. Coats, sweaters, and winter accessories seem to go on sale immediately after Christmas, even if we have yet to receive our first drop of snow. The great thing is you can find some awesome deals using your new Christmas money, the unfortunate news is there is little desire to purchase spring merchandise when you're scraping ice!

There are a few key items that you really should grab during this transition period:

Coats- Coats are a great buy to be had after the holiday season. Coats are expensive so getting them at a discounted rate is very desirable. A coat is an investment piece, unlikely to change with trends (if you purchase well) and will last you seasons to come.

Basics- Stock up on basic tees and tanks when they are on sale. They make for great layering pieces as the warm weather transcends.

Winter Accessories- Scarves, gloves, stocking caps, are all great buys at a discounted rate. Many of these items are simple in design making them timeless. Get the best deals after Christmas is over, although there may be slim pickings.

Some great transition pieces are jackets, cardigans, and anything that you can layer. Take for instance these two pieces. Both could be layered with a long sleeve tee during colder times, then when it gets warm, swap out that turtleneck for a tank. Not only is it practical to layer, it also polishes your outfit making for a well put together style.unlabeled apparelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01097978102711656249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-664684162579398701.post-30613561334489294982011-12-09T09:22:00.000-08:002011-12-09T09:22:20.889-08:00High FashionThis past weekend I was receiving a much needed haircut by a very talented stylist. During our typical time-passing conversation the question arose,
'Who are your favorite designers?'
A question to which I replied, 'High fashion or ready to wear?'
'High fashion,' the stylist said.
I drew a blank. Had I really not one designer that I absolutely, wholeheartedly adored? Perhaps I was too consumed in the retail business to really give it a second thought.
I responded regrettably, "I don't keep up with it much.'

Stop right there! Aren't you a clothing store owner, Breanne? Shouldn't you be able to recite every fashion designer by era & popularity and in alphabetical order at the tip of a hat? I am certain my college professors would have been embarrassed at my lack of knowledge in that very moment. I had nothing. What is wrong with me, why couldn't I at least have pretended I knew what I was talking about.

Of course, I know the classic designers, but for me to answer that question with certainty would have felt like a lie. I am so apathetic to high fashion, mostly because I can't afford it, although for most people that is half of the appeal; daydreaming of a wedding dress that costs more than your house. For the sake and purpose of this blog, however, I am going to post up some pieces from today's top designers in hopes to regain my former knowledge in the high fashion industry & leave today with a little more inspiration.

Alexander McQueen- Sound familiar? That is because he designed the duchess' dress for the royal wedding. Unlike the vintage-inspired wedding dress Kate graced the aisle with, his designs are often very structured and simple.

Yes, he does feature prints but in his prints I have come to notice there is always a nice symmetry to the patterns. If the opportunity presented itself then the first thing I would purchase would be a nice, structured blazer.

Do you find it 'ODD' that clothing can be made from food? No, I am not talking about Lady GaGa's epic meat dress, (please don't let those images haunt me for all eternity), I am talking about a clothing company that manufactures everything using natural ingredients. The ingredients are what I think you will find to be very peculiar and most likely these are not the first "food" items to have come to mind. The two main ingredients include; soybeans and milk..but why use them?

Soybeans-

Have the moisture absorption of cotton

Have 16 amino acids

Are anti-bacterial

Cashmere-like feel

Chemical free & non genetically modified!

Milk-

Warmth retention properties make milk similar to wool

Absorbs moisture

18 amino acids

Anti-fungal & anti-bacterial

No use of pesticides or chemicals!

I think it is fantastic that we are all starting to pay more attention to the things we eat and drink. There are so many chemicals that alter our foods and that have negative effects on our health. ODD is doing something really great here, in my opinion, they are opening up a whole new can of worms. Did you think foods were the only product doused in chemicals? Think again!

There is formaldehyde on your clothes! You mean the stuff they use on dead people? Yes! Most of what I have read has said that there is a very insignificant amount, but the formaldehyde is there, even after the wash! One study was done in which 20 items were tested using a chromotropic acid method. 11 of the 20 items tested positive for formaldehyde. The 9 items that were free of formaldehyde were all fabrics made from synthetic materials. The Scientists concluded that even after several washes, the clothes were not formaldehyde free. EW!

I would carry ODD at the store, but it is a little pricey, as are most things organic.

We just got these in last week! They are made by BLANK which is my newest favorite denim designer. Why, you ask; because these pants fit so well, they are comfortable enough to exercise in- I swear it, and They are $88. I know, designer denim under $100, impossible- until now!

Colored jeans are all the rave in the fashion industry and they are going to be even hotter this Spring. I think what I love the most about colored jeans, is that you can look so trendy with such little effort. I would pair these pants with a structured blazer over a graphic tee, or a chunky knit sweater and a black pump..and in the warmer months these would look nice with wedges and bright tops.
unlabeled apparelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01097978102711656249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-664684162579398701.post-5270112493715523602011-11-18T13:33:00.000-08:002011-11-18T13:37:14.038-08:00Small Business Saturday! You may not be familiarized with the concept as it is a fairly new campaign. The idea is to help small businesses drive traffic during the Holiday season. There are so many big box chain stores that offer disgustingly low prices, that many of us small businesses simply cannot compete. Did you know that when you shop at a small, local, retailer, 45% of what you purchase is pumped directly back into the local economy? Furthermore, when you shop at a big conglomerate store you are only dispensing a mere 13% back into the local economy.
Holy smokes, batman!

Small businesses are really important, especially now. They provide the majority of jobs across the United States. When you shop locally, you are feeding tax dollars back into your own city which employs medics, policemen, firemen, teachers, and so many more. Let us not forget that small businesses also hire other local small businesses to help them advertise, manufacture, remodel, you name it!

So round-up your American Express gift card and go here: http://www.smallbusinesssaturday.com/and register your card.

When you spend $25 at a participating retailer (we are one of them) American Express will reimburse you $25 on your next Credit Card Statement. You see the stacks of t-shirts ranging from XS to XL and ponder what size might fit you best. Then, one might hold the shirt in the air, stretching it from hand to hand so as to visualize how the length and width might lay according to one's body. The same is true for men as it is for women. We come in so many different shapes, sizes, and lengths that it is rather challenging to assume 'a one size fits all' approach.

The truth is there is no regulation on sizing in the fashion industry. A "long" length in denim could mean an inseam of 36" or 33" there simply is no consistency. This makes the average shopper frustrated and with good reason.

I often hear women discuss Marilyn Monroe's size 10 to be somewhat unfathomable for being such a popular celebrity; stating things like, 'well Marilyn wore a size 10 you know, women were curvier then!' Which, agreeably, the statement has some truth to it- famous women were a little bit curvier in the past, but the size 10 does not directly translate to a modern day size 10. You see, the fashion industry has figured out that psychology has a lot to do with what we purchase, how we purchase, and why we purchase. If there was a clothing store in which you wore a size 2 and another clothing store in which you wore a size 6..don't you think you would want to see more size '2's' in your closet? Yes. Of course- don't feel ashamed. This is why as time progresses, the sizing has become much more skewed. If you buy vintage clothing you will be familiar with the differences in sizing; things have become 'roomier' for us.

For men, it is all about the lengths of things. Men prefer their t-shirts to be long and are often disappointed when the tee's shrink in the wash. It is important to ask the sales person whether or not the t-shirt was pre-shrunk; if the answer is, 'yes', then you shouldn't expect much shrinking. We will save laundry 101 for another day's blog, but there are benefits to washing things in a particular way.

There are a few main categories to consider for women:

Juniors

Young Contemporary

Misses

Petites

Plus Sizes

Juniors- The sizes in this department are typically numbered ODD numbers. No, they aren't peculiar-they are usually 1,3,5,7,9,11. This department is intended for young girls typically 11-18. Places that which carry these sizes can be department stores, abercrombie & fitch, hollister, wet seal etc. These sizes run much smaller as they are intended to be worn by teens.

Young Contemporary- The sizes in this category are often EVEN numbers such as; 0,2,4,6,8,10,12. This department suits young women ages 18-30ish. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish the difference between young contemporary and women's and usually they are mixed in the same department. You can find these in department stores, boutiques, and others... that I really can't think of examples of.

Misses- Usually intended for middle-aged women or later. There will be a more relaxed fit, and comfort is taken into consideration much more. This would be stores like Talbots, J. Jill, J. Crew, Chico's, etc.

Petite- This category will run shorter in length but can also be narrower to accommodate a smaller frame. A petite woman is more than a 'vertically challenged' woman, it is meant for a smaller bone structure too. A good rule of thumb is when shopping petites one should size up by one size; if you wear a 0 in women's select a 2P (2 petite).

Plus Sizes- There is an expanding market for plus sizes. Usually they begin sizing at 14 but sometimes a 16. Department stores will carry plus sizes, as will Lane Bryant. I am not very familiar with stores that offer plus sizing, so please feel free to comment and share suggestions.

Is my blog too long- winded? There is so much more I can talk about but I will spare you with this last thought. Below is a different type of sizing, usually only found on jeans. The number to the left is what you might be more familiar with, and the number to the right represents the waist size-although not always accurate to the size that you select because there are often other contributing factors to the size of jeans we buy.

00-24

0-25/26

2-27

4-28

6-29

8-30

10-31

12-32

14-33

This also depends on the store, the fabric, the fit, and the clothing line so don't get too hung up on it! And men's sizing is measured with waist and length of inseam. The number to the left is the waist size and the number to the right is the inseam or length.

32/30

32/32

32/34

32/36

I hope that this blog entry allows you to appreciate the size that you are much more than prior to reading it. The main purpose of this was to elaborate that sizing is irrelevant and one should ALWAYS choose fit over size. No one sees the size inside of your pants, and if you are so concerned about it- cut the tags out! :)

Housing everything from; recipes, crafts, event planning, and clever insights. If you are not familiar with this site, you must check it out. I think even men may enjoy creating a board or two.

The general idea of the website is to "pin" something that you like, the website then gives kudos to the person who originally posted or created the item. From there, other members can also "pin" the item you posted, along with anything else they find on the infinite web. For instance, someone could even "pin" this blog, or any pictures from this blog. The method is really quite ingenious, especially for bloggers.

I am going to share with you something that I think is "pin worthy":

They have been very popular with all ages of ladies, and definitely one of our best selling items thus far. I love how each headband is so very different, featuring vintage inspired pieces using materials like; brassy metals, shimmery pearls, and pieces of what looks to be-old books.

So if you haven't joined pinterest, you should @ http://www.pinterest.com/ and if you haven't checked out these super popular headbands, well then you should!unlabeled apparelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01097978102711656249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-664684162579398701.post-59999435909232278122011-10-20T17:04:00.000-07:002011-10-20T17:04:58.136-07:00Shop here not there! We are going to give you some awesome reasons as to why you should spend your hard earned dollars at Unlabeled, rather than at a big box chain retailer. First of all, without getting too political, when you shop locally it is kind of like recycling your money. The sales tax that is charged goes back to the city to fund projects such as; rebuilding roads and education. Often times when shopping online, you may not have to pay a sales tax... it is actually quite a big debate right now.

A lot of big chains will say they emphasize customer service, but the truth is they have so much overhead they usually don't fork over the cash to pay enough employees to cover the sales floor. Yes, it is smart to be conservative with the business dollar, but, it is also crucial to have more than 2 employees in a 7,000 sq ft space. (This extensive knowledge on the topic comes from 7 years of retail experience) ;) Bottom line, we will give you very personalized customer service!

Now, let's discuss 'outlet malls'. The fact that Oklahoma recently obtained an outlet mall is fantastic. We totally appreciate having one here, it is a great sign of growth during an economic time when other states are truly struggling. Indeed, no one likes to pass up a great deal, but there is a catch! Outlet stores sometimes obtain last seasons merchandise, but they also have their own brand. For instance; store XYZ is a really reputable brand at a very high end mall. XYZ outlet is selling last years sweaters which were originally sold at the high-end XYZ store. These sweaters were marked down on clearance, and still after the holiday season they remained on the racks (for whatever reason; awkward fit, too bright, too itchy, etc.). Next to last year's sweaters XYZ is selling a brand new sweater, made specifically for the XYZ outlet store. What is tricky about it, is the outlet malls create this 'illusion' of a really great deal, and sometimes you do get a great deal, but sometimes the stores will use the image-branding of the high-end store to promote the lower-quality sweater.

Does that make sense? Here's a recap:
High-end XYZ store gives last years merchandise to its sister store XYZ outlet.
XYZ outlet re-sells merchandise for a higher price than what it was on sale for at high-end XYZ
XYZ outlet also sells sweaters that are produced with lower quality construction & fabrics but can charge more because of its reputable image.

The above sums up why you should choose Unlabeled over big-box stores, but why should you choose Unlabeled over other local stores?

Well, that is totally up to you! We think we have really cool stuff. We feature a lot of local artists and 90% of our men's tee's were made in the USA. Even if it wasn't made in the USA, we still have quite a few items that were fairly traded, organic, or handmade. We began the week with the temps in the high 80's and we can expect to see the temp drop to as long as 38. Brr- that 40 degree drop calls for a coat, jacket, or even better....the new alternative apparel fleece pullover:

We have the pullover in 3 different colors; fuschia (above), green, and charcoal. Let me tell you why I love it. First off, Alternative Apparel makes it- so you know it is well constructed. Secondly, the fleece lining has got to be what sleeping on clouds feels like; it is the softest, most luxurious feeling fleece ever. I am not even exaggerating, I promise. Also, it is eco-friendly by using materials like; recycled polyester, organic cotton, and naturally occuring rayon.

This sweatshirt has an off-the-shoulder neckline, which is left unfinished making it look that much cooler. The kangaroo pouch is convenient for your hands and not unflattering. It is a regular fit, but I think it would be great worn oversized with leggings! For extra warmth, top it off with a scarf. I am a creature of comfort, so it is no surprise that this is one of my favorite things in the store right now. I just see myself wearing it on the sofa, next to a fire, sipping on hot tea...or a Sunday afternoon reading the paper. Come by, slip it on, and I bet you'll end up wearing it out the door!
unlabeled apparelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01097978102711656249noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-664684162579398701.post-66506663849113627042011-10-17T11:28:00.000-07:002011-10-17T11:28:33.054-07:00Grand Opening Wrap UpAs most of you know, we held our Grand Opening this past Saturday, October 15th. The coolest denim in the Okc Metro? The jeans that you DON'T wash? Everything you ever wanted to know 'bout them jeans you can find right here!

Let's get started with the basics:

Selvedge by definition-"the edge of woven fabric finished so as to prevent raveling, often in a narrow tape effect, different from the body of the fabric” (source: dictionary.com). Selvedge or "self edge" is proof that the jeans are legit. Flip them over at the bottom and see for yourself! Below is an example:

Below is a "shuttle loom", a wooden loom from which selvedge denim is made. This is a process that has been around since the 1800's in Japan. Haven't heard of it? This is why; in the 1950's there became such a high demand for jeans, mostly because of punk kids rebelling and listening to rock music, that Levi's took initiative to make some big bucks. That is when the manufacturing process became faster, more efficient, and jeans were now mass produced (this is how most of our jeans are made today).

Denim Washes- Selvedge denim will most commonly be found in a "raw wash". We don't want to confuse you, but it is possible that denim can be a raw wash and not be selvedge. A raw wash simply means that it is unprocessed denim, or denim in its natural state (untreated).

Dyeing Process- The reason why selvedge denim fades the way it does is because of a process called "rope dyeing". There are two types of dyeing; rope dyeing and vat dyeing. Most of the time your jeans will have been vat dyed.

Vat Dyeing- The yarns are shocked and the dye quickly penetrates to the core of the yarn.

Rope Dyeing- The yarns are dipped several times (30ish) and in between each 'dip' they are allowed to dry. This builds up layers of colors.

In rope dying, the yarns are not left in the dye baths long enough to absorb the color at the core. This is why after time, the selvedge jeans will gradually fade, and why your massly produced jeans pretty much keep their color.

How to wear them:
Hard! Wear them hard. Roll in dirt, do squat thrusts, jump up and down, wear them every day, and most importantly, DON'T WASH THEM! At least not for a year, you can wash them sooner if it is killing you...but a full year will make them optimal. The more you do in these jeans, the more customized and cool they will become.

When you first take your jeans home they will feel really stiff and they will look like this:
You might first even question why you purchased jeans that were so dark and stiff. But soon you will notice the gradual changes. Over time, the denim breaks down, loosens up, and fades.

"Whiskers" will form around the thigh area :

Whatever you put in your pocket will have its own memoir:

And "honeycombs" will form behind the knees:

We realize that was a lot of info to pack into one small blog- so take a deep breath and absorb. Basically, here is what you need to know:

He specializes in the pen & ink medium; focusing on animals for the subject. And when we say animals, we do not mean your typical fuzzy wuzzies, what we mean is power animals. Yes, power animals; animals just doing what they do. Alright, while we might have made up the term 'power animals', it was the best way to describe the pictures. Actually, how about we post some pictures so that you all can see for yourselves just how talented this man is.
We offer a selection of trendy clothes, inspiring artwork, and funky novelty gifts. Although some may say we target 18-35 year olds, we would like to think that people enjoy our merchandise at any age. For instance, who wouldn't get a laugh out of a book titled, 'What's your poo telling you?'?

A popular question that we often receive is, "So are your clothes, like, blank or something?" and the answer is no and yes...but mostly no. Allow us to elaborate; Unlabeled is this crazy concept of wearing clothes that you like wearing because they look cool and because they make you feel great. Somewhere between the 1990's and the 2000's logo's and labels became 'the thing' and the focus on fashion was thrown by the wayside. That is why Unlabeled apparel is bringing style and suave back to the market; with ingenious screen prints, eye-popping palettes, and one-of-a-kind designs, everyone is sure to find something.

"What sizes do you carry?" is another question that we frequently get. Unlabeled carries sizes 24-32 (XS-XL) for women and 28-36 (XS-XXL) for men. Certain styles are not produced in some sizes but we do try to carry the aforementioned in most styles. Let us emphasize that there is no sizing regulation in the United States so often people are surprised when things fit...or don't fit- but that is a topic in itself for another day's blog.

"Where do you get your stuff?" the 'stuff' comes from going to market, but also from local artists, and small companies that haven't hit it big just yet. We tried to buy items made in the USA as often as possible, along with fair trade items, and handmade items; although the whole store is not made up of it- we gave it our best effort.
